About Course

Network security sits at the center of almost every IT and cybersecurity role: it is the discipline of designing, defending, and monitoring the networks that carry an organization’s data. This professional certificate takes learners from the core concepts of network defense through firewalls, VPNs, wireless security, intrusion detection, monitoring, incident response, and compliance, finishing with a capstone project in which students design a secured network for a realistic small-to-medium organization.

This course builds directly on the concepts introduced in Basic Networking Fundamentals and Introduction to Cybersecurity, but does not require them as a prerequisite — core networking and security concepts are re-introduced where needed.

What Will You Learn?

  • Explain core network security principles including the CIA triad, defense-in-depth, and common attack types
  • Design a segmented network architecture using firewalls, DMZs, and zero-trust principles
  • Configure and evaluate VPN and secure remote-access solutions
  • Secure a wireless network against common attack vectors
  • Deploy and interpret intrusion detection/prevention concepts and network monitoring practices
  • Respond to a network security incident using a structured process
  • Apply security hardening standards and compliance basics to a real network design
  • Complete a capstone project: design a secured network for a realistic small-to-medium organization

Course Content

Module 1: Foundations of Network Security & the Threat Landscape
Build the conceptual foundation for the entire course: what network security is, how threats/vulnerabilities/risk relate, the main attack types and threat actors, and the defense-in-depth model used throughout the rest of the program.

  • What Is Network Security? Goals, Scope & the CIA Triad
    00:00
  • Understanding Threats, Vulnerabilities & Risk
    00:00
  • Common Attack Types Targeting Networks
    00:00
  • Threat Actors and Why Organizations Are Targeted
    00:00
  • The Defense-in-Depth Model
    00:00
  • Module 1 Quiz: Network Security Foundations
  • Assignment: Threat Landscape & Defense-in-Depth Assessment

Module 2: Network Architecture & Security Zones
Turn defense-in-depth into a concrete network design: segmentation, firewalls, DMZs, Zero Trust basics, VPNs for remote access, and securing the wireless network.

Module 3: Network Protocols & Their Vulnerabilities (Deep Dive)
A deeper technical dive into TCP/IP, DNS, ARP, routing, and ICMP — how each protocol works and how each is actually exploited.

Module 4: Intrusion Detection & Prevention Systems (IDS/IPS)
How network intrusions are actually detected and, where appropriate, blocked — IDS vs IPS, detection methodologies, alert triage, evasion, and a walkthrough of real open-source tools.

Module 5: Endpoint & Server Security in Networked Environments
Securing the devices that sit on the network: hardening, patch management, Network Access Control, IoT-specific challenges, and a case study tying it all together.

Module 6: Network Monitoring, Logging & SIEM Basics
Turning network activity into visible, actionable evidence: why logging matters, centralization and retention, SIEM concepts, baselining, and building a real monitoring plan.

Module 7: Incident Response for Network Security Events
This module shifts from prevention and detection to what happens after a network security event occurs. You will learn the structured incident response lifecycle used by real security teams, how to contain incidents without destroying evidence, how to preserve evidence properly, how to communicate clearly during a live incident, and how to run a post-incident review that actually improves future defenses.

Module 8: Security Policies, Compliance & Hardening Standards
Technology alone does not secure a network. This module covers the policies, compliance frameworks, and hardening standards that give technical controls (from Modules 1-7) a consistent, organization-wide foundation, including how to manage risk introduced by vendors and third parties, and how to write a practical acceptable use policy.

Module 9: Cloud & Hybrid Network Security Basics
Most modern networks are no longer purely on-premises. This module covers how cloud networking differs from the on-premises concepts covered in Modules 1-8, the shared responsibility model that defines who secures what in the cloud, how to secure cloud network configurations, the specific challenges of hybrid environments, and the most common cloud misconfiguration risks.

Module 10: Advanced Threats & Emerging Risks
This module moves beyond the common attack types covered in Module 1 into more advanced and emerging threats: persistent, well-resourced attackers, supply chain compromise, techniques that hide inside legitimate tools, the emerging role of AI in both attack and defense, and how to stay current as the threat landscape keeps changing after this course ends.

Module 11: Professional Practice & Career Pathways
This module shifts from technical content to the professional skills that determine whether technical knowledge from Modules 1-10 actually translates into effective, credible, ethical work: documentation, working with non-technical stakeholders, relevant certifications, building a portfolio, and professional ethics and responsibility.

Module 12: Capstone – Secure Network Design Project
This closing module brings together everything from Modules 1 through 11 into a single, integrated capstone project: designing a secure network for a realistic small-to-medium organization. It includes the capstone brief and requirements, a draft feedback checkpoint, the final capstone submission, and a comprehensive final certification examination covering the whole course.
