Across South Sudan, East Africa and beyond, communities do not lack talent or commitment. What they often lack is trained leadership: people who can bring others together, resolve disagreements fairly, plan realistic action, manage resources honestly, and speak up effectively for their community. This professional certificate course was built to develop exactly those people.

Over eleven modules and more than fifty lessons, you will move from the foundations of personal leadership through to advanced community development practice: emotional intelligence, public communication, team leadership, conflict resolution, participatory community mobilisation, project leadership, good governance, and advocacy. The course finishes with a practical capstone in which you design a real community leadership initiative you could actually run.

How this course works

This is a self-paced, university-level professional development programme. Every lesson combines clear written teaching, practical examples, realistic case studies drawn from community settings, reflection questions, and exercises you complete using your own community or organisation. Checkpoint quizzes appear after every two modules, and a final assessment closes the course. Selected lessons include high-quality educational videos and downloadable worksheets and templates you can reuse in your own work.

Certificate eligibility

Learners who complete all modules, submit the capstone assignment, and pass the final assessment with a score of 70% or higher are eligible for the Bang Ti Lenydoor Learning Academy Certificate of Completion in Leadership & Community Development.

Estimated study time

Plan for approximately 40 to 50 hours of total study: reading, videos, reflection activities, exercises and assessments. Most learners complete the course in 8 to 12 weeks studying 4 to 5 hours per week. Nothing expires; you may move at your own pace.

Module 2: Self-Leadership & Emotional Intelligence
Leading yourself first: self-awareness, emotional intelligence, time and energy management, resilience and a growth mindset.

Module 4: Leading Teams: Motivation, Delegation & Feedback
Building effective teams, understanding what motivates people, delegating with accountability, and giving feedback that improves performance.

Module 5: Conflict Resolution & Negotiation
Understanding conflict, choosing the right resolution approach, basic mediation for community leaders, and principled negotiation.

Module 6: Understanding Community Development
What community development is, its core principles, asset-based approaches, power and inclusion, and the role of youth and women.

Module 7: Community Mobilisation & Participation
Entering communities respectfully, participatory tools, running effective meetings, building coalitions and managing volunteers.

Turning community needs into an action plan: vision and goals, local resource mobilisation, leading implementation and measuring impact.

Good governance for community organisations, financial transparency, safeguarding and do-no-harm, and leading change responsibly.
