Safeguarding, Child Protection & PSEA Awareness Professional Certificate
About Course
Every organisation that works with children, young people and communities has a duty to keep them safe from harm caused by the people and activities connected with its work. This course introduces safeguarding, child protection and protection from sexual exploitation and abuse (PSEA) in plain language, using careful, non-graphic wording and fictional examples from small organisations in South Sudan and East Africa.
It is written for staff, volunteers, teachers, trainers and community leaders of NGOs, schools, youth groups, faith groups and community organisations. You will learn what the key terms mean and why they matter, the principles of do no harm, best interests, dignity and non-discrimination, and the general ideas behind the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the UN Secretary-General’s bulletin on special measures against sexual exploitation and abuse. You will study general types of harm and warning signs, power imbalances, codes of conduct, photographs and online safety, safe recruitment, responding to a disclosure, reporting channels, community complaints mechanisms, a survivor-centred approach, protecting whistleblowers, confidentiality, risk assessment, safeguarding in outreach and education programmes, and self-care.
The course has six modules and 24 written lessons, each with an illustrative fictional example, a practical activity that needs only paper or free tools, reflection questions and key terms. Every module ends with a quiz, and Module 6 contains a capstone project and a 12-question final examination. The course is designed for about 20 hours of study and you can work at your own pace.
Please note: this is an awareness course only. It does not make you a trained safeguarding officer and does not replace your own organisation’s policy, training or procedures. In real situations, always follow your organisation’s policy and report through its designated focal point and local referral pathways. The course does not describe the laws of any country. On completion you receive a Bang Ti Lenydoor certificate of completion. It is not an accredited qualification, and the course does not promise jobs, income or scholarships.
