Introduction to JavaScript Programming Professional Certificate
About Course
This beginner course teaches you to read and write JavaScript, the language that makes web pages interactive. It is written for young people and for staff and volunteers of small NGOs and community groups in South Sudan and East Africa, who often work with a phone or a modest computer and limited data. Everything uses free tools: a modern browser with its developer console and a free code editor or any plain text editor. You can also use a free online code sandbox if you have no computer of your own.
You begin with what programming is, how to run code in the browser console, in a script tag and in a separate .js file, and how to use variables, data types, operators, strings and template literals. You then learn to make decisions with comparisons and conditions, to repeat work with loops, and to organise code into functions with parameters, return values and scope.
The middle of the course covers arrays, objects, JSON and the common array methods map, filter, find, reduce and forEach. You then use the DOM to select elements, change text and styles, respond to events and handle forms. The later modules teach debugging with console.log, error messages and breakpoints, a gentle introduction to asynchronous code with timers, promises and fetch, good coding habits, and security basics such as never trusting user input and never placing secrets in front-end code.
Each lesson has objectives, a fictional example, a hands-on activity, reflection questions and key terms, and the JavaScript examples were checked by running them. Browser menus and online tools change between versions, so you are taught the ideas and encouraged to use the equivalent option in your own tools. The course ends with a capstone, a small browser-based savings tracker for a fictional community group that you assess against a checklist, and a final examination. You receive a Bang Ti Lenydoor certificate of completion, which is not an accredited qualification. Learning to program takes regular practice, and the course does not promise any job or income.
