SQL & Databases Professional Certificate
About Course
This beginner course teaches databases and SQL using tools that cost nothing: SQLite, a free database engine that keeps a whole database in one file, and DB Browser for SQLite, a free and open source visual tool. It is written for young people and small-organisation staff in South Sudan and East Africa who often work on older, low-specification laptops with limited data.
You begin with what a database is, how tables, rows, columns and keys work, and how a database differs from a spreadsheet. You then learn to read data with SELECT, filter and sort it, summarise it with COUNT, SUM, AVG and GROUP BY, and change it safely with INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE. Later modules cover designing tables with primary and foreign keys, normalisation, INNER and LEFT JOINs, NULL values, simple subqueries, views and indexes.
Because beneficiary records are about real people, the course also teaches data privacy and backup habits. The same standard SQL works, with small differences, in MySQL and PostgreSQL, and the lessons point out where those differences appear. All example data is fictional.
The course has 24 written lessons, a quiz after each of the first five modules, a capstone project and a 12-question final examination. It is designed for about 20 hours of study at your own pace. On completion you receive a Bang Ti Lenydoor certificate of completion; it is not an accredited qualification.
