Recommendation letters carry real weight in scholarship and university applications — here’s how to get ones that actually help you.
Choose the Right Recommenders
Pick people who know your work well — a professor who supervised a project, a manager who saw your growth — rather than someone with a prestigious title who barely knows you.
Give Them Time
Ask at least 4–6 weeks before the deadline. A rushed letter is rarely a strong one.
Make It Easy for Them
Provide your CV, a summary of the program you’re applying to, and a few specific points you’d appreciate them mentioning (with their agreement) — this helps them write something specific rather than generic.
Follow Up Politely
A gentle reminder a week before the deadline is normal and appreciated, not rude.
