Your Statement of Purpose is often the most personal part of your application u2014 it’s where a university sees you as more than grades and test scores.

What It Should Cover

Why this specific program, why this specific university, what you’ve done that prepared you for it, and what you plan to do afterward. A strong SOP connects your past experience, your chosen program, and your future goals into one coherent story.

Be Specific, Not Generic

Avoid statements that could apply to any applicant at any university (“I have always loved learning”). Reference specific courses, faculty research, or program features that genuinely drew you to this particular institution.

Show, Don’t Just Tell

Instead of saying you’re “passionate about public health,” describe a specific experience u2014 a project, a job, a volunteer role u2014 that demonstrates it.

Address Weaknesses Honestly

If there’s a gap in your record (a lower grade, a break in study), briefly and honestly explain it rather than hoping it goes unnoticed.

Proofread Carefully

Have someone else read it. Typos and unclear sentences undercut an otherwise strong application.
